2026 BMW X5 Overview
BMW is a brand known for its excellent road manners, and the 2026 X5 SUV is a satisfying car to drive. BMW’s turbocharged inline-six comes standard and provides smooth, always-on power. A twin-turbo V-8 adds even more performance and an audible roar that other sixes lack.
The BMW X5 also offers a plug-in hybrid, but review that model separately. Inside this SUV, the X5’s deluxe cabin is spacious for four adults. But five can fit just as easily. There’s no third-row option in this SUV — you’ll have to buy the larger X7 for a third row.

The BMW X5 xDrive40i is the perfect blend of luxury and economy
The base sDrive40i trim is rear-wheel drive, but the xDrive40i and xDrive M60i models come standard with all-wheel drive. We like saving money as much as we like great performance, and that’s why we think the xDrive40i X5 is worth buying.

The 2026 BMW X5 sports activity vehicle. It comes with all-wheel drive and is available at a relatively low price in this premium class. We would recommend adding the Premium Package for its hard-up display, LED exterior lighting, remote engine-start capability, and Harman/Kardon stereo system.

Engine and Performance
The BMW X5 is offered with one of three distinct powertrains. Each of these SUVs is paired with a different model. The X5s, badged sDrive40i or xDrive40i, are powered by a sweetly tuned 375-hp turbocharged inline-six. That’s enough horsepower to blow away any other BMW model.
The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e comes with a turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor for 483 horsepower, but we’ll review that model separately. Last but not least, the M60i has a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8.
All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, ensuring drivers remain eager for power in virtually any driving situation. The highlight of this generation of BMW SUVs is its steering, which feels connected and direct.

The Audi Q7 is still comparable to the BMW X5 in this regard, but it’s now much closer. The X5 continues to perform reliably when taking fast corners, providing the driver with a level of predictability that the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class lacks.
2026 BMW X5 0–60-mph time
When we tested the 375-horsepower 2025 X5 xDrive40i, it hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The 523-horsepower M60i hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds in the same test.
BMW X5 2026 towing and payload capacity
The X5 has a maximum towing capacity of 7200 lbs. Payload capacity is up to 1193 lbs, but requires the M60i model to be ordered.
Fuel Economy
The EPA has not yet released any fuel economy figures for the 2026 BMW X5. However, the 2025 model is rated at 23 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. In our real-world 75-mile highway fuel economy test, both X5s exceeded their EPA estimates. The xDrive40i achieved 28 mpg, and the M60i achieved 28 mpg. 2026 BMW X5 Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The 2026 BMW X5 has plenty of interior space for adults in both the front and rear seats. Once inside, passengers will enjoy high-quality materials, plenty of charging points for devices, and power-adjustable front seats with memory for the driver, depending on the options selected.

All models feature a power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting. Massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, and heated front armrests and steering wheel make the X5 feel like a high-end luxury SUV. But it can add a lot to the bottom line.
Speaking of expensive options, buyers can add a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system with diamond-dome tweeters. The X5 cabin offers plenty of cargo space. With the rear seats in place, we were able to fit 11 of our carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats.
The rear seats fold down—an operation that can be done from either side of the SUV or from the rear. We found room for 26 cases. In this test, case by case, the GLE-Class matched the X5’s results, but its rear seats are not quite as easy to stow.
IT & CONNECTIVITY
When you enter the cabin of the 2026 BMW X5, you’ll be greeted by a curved display screen that spans two-thirds of the dashboard. Behind the wheel of this SUV, a 12.3-inch screen serves as a gauge display.
In this case, though, a larger 14.9-inch touchscreen provides access to BMW’s iDrive infotainment interface. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.
BMW X5 Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The BMW X5 offers basic driver-assist features as standard. These include automatic emergency braking, but there are also more advanced features like hands-free driving mode.
